They recently strengthened their standards, asking for better side crash protection, headlight performance, and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash pedestrian system performance.
As a result, far fewer cars received top honors this year. Only 48 models received awards, compared to 101 winners in the 2022 model year. Of those 48 winners, 20 were named Top Safety Picks. Six of those came from the Mazda brand.
