In an increasing effort to keep drivers safe on the nation’s roads, last year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) launched a revised series of criteria for testing vehicles’ safety. Underscoring the Mazda brand’s uncompromised commitment to driver safety, vehicles including the 2024 Mazda CX-90 earned the top designation of IIHS Top Safety Pick+ for 2024. Tumminia Mazda explains how the new IIHS safety metrics make this honor even more meaningful than years past.
What’s Different in the New IIHS Test?
The roads of 2024 look significantly different than in previous years. For example, larger passenger vehicles have become increasingly popular, and new pedestrian-identifying technology has been installed in many cars. These are some of the factors that IIHS has taken into account in its revised test, using a combination of crash tests from various angles and real-world accident data to evaluate new vehicles according to their safety.
How Did MAZDA Vehicles Score?
Based on the updated criteria, four Mazda vehicles earned the highest distinction of IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with a fifth earning a Top Safety Pick:
- 2024 Mazda3
- 2024 Mazda CX-30
- 2024 Mazda CX-50 built after August 2023
- 2024 Mazda CX-90
- Additionally, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV earned the high rank of IIHS Top Safety Pick.
Many current cars have driver-assist features. Where Mazda models differ – and the reason so many of them performed so well in testing – is because their comprehensive suite of i-Activsense® safety features, including Road Keep Assist and Blind Spot Assist, work better.
