By comparison, the Toyota Highlander produces 265 horsepower from a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. And while it offers a hybrid powertrain, there are a couple of catches. To begin with, the Toyota model’s hybrid powertrain produces less power than the gas version (243 horsepower); it also lacks a plug-in hybrid option. The Mazda CX-70 PHEV produces 340 net horsepower and plugs in for a significant range advantage.
Comfort
The Mazda CX-70 also has a distinct edge in its tech and comfort features. The 12.3-inch infotainment display with available Mazda Connect™ navigation is a vast improvement over the standard 8.0-inch screen in the Toyota Highlander. The Mazda SUV also has multi-level front heated seats with driver’s lumbar support, and leatherette and wood trim on the dash, door, and interior trim. The Toyota Highlander uses more plastics throughout and doesn’t look or feel nearly as premium.
