It’s no secret that new Mazda models are safe, as evidenced by their many proactive safety features. They’ve also met a major milestone to prove it. Tumminia Mazda shares all the details.
What’s IIHS?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit organization funded by the insurance industry. They regularly conduct car crash tests with new vehicles and evaluate their safety technologies to determine how safe they are. Their main goal is to reduce deaths, injuries, and property damage from car crashes.
What’s a Top Safety Pick Award?
When the IIHS evaluates vehicles, they honor the top performers with an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award. vehicles that meet the IIHS’s more demanding award criteria receive an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation. To qualify for the “+”, vehicles need good ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front and side tests, and acceptable- or good-rated headlights. Their standard (or available) front crash prevention systems should have a good rating in the pedestrian test and an acceptable or good rating in the vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test.
How Did MAZDA Perform?
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 recently received the coveted TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, which joined the ranks of eight other Mazda vehicles this year. This is also a momentous overall achievement for the brand. Mazda has now had 100 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award winners since the program first began in 2008. Of those winners, 74 earned the top-tier IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. The other 2026 winners include:
- MAZDA3 Sedan
- MAZDA3 Hatchback
- MAZDA CX-30
- MAZDA CX-50
